a co-worker of mine asked me this today but i wasn't sure of the answer so here it goes, can he use oyster shells in his marine tank?i know in freshyland all you'd have to do is boil them is this the case w/saltwater too...?

thanks

anyone please help :p this guy wants to start the cycling soon :/

If he cleans them well I see no reason not to use them. My Missus is always dumping the things in our tank, along with any snail shells she finds.

I doubt they will have much of an effect on pH in a marine tank. First of all, the pH is supposed to be around 8.2 or 8.3. That's higher I think than most f/w tanks. Second, if the tank is large a couple of shells isn't going to make a difference there.
