I have a dempsey/boesemani set-up and i want to create a slate rockscape. One that includes caves and interesting places to venture. Trouble is any attempts so far have been useless and look rather daft and unsightly.

Wondered if people have any experience. Whether it be techniques to glue/silicon bits together, or shapes/sizes of rock to use for what areas.

Any input greatly appreciated. Perhaps you have an example you could share :)

Oh, yes, I was planning to do this in my tank.

You basically get a bunch of pieces of slate, and make an L with them in a corner, alternating big rocks and small ones to build mini caves that can be seen from the side of the tank. Kind of like doing it with popsicle sticks if that makes sense. I saw it at my lfs, but not with water in it. Looked pretty nice.

My biggest problem with doing anything with slate... is finding slate that doesn't raise my PH! Even places that sell it as aquarium slate will raise my ph from a nice 7.0-7.2 to 8+

I have tried this but the silicone glue always seems to give way after about 6 months. Then you get nasty rock falls and watch out fishies!
