i have 2 big coy goldfish (5") and 6 blue dwarf gourami (2") that i am looking to put in a 29 gal and was wondering if i could put a smaller school of tiger barbs in the tank or if they would eat the fins off the other fish?? i have read that they are semi-aggressive and like to "nip" but i dont know if they would bother those massive goldfish or the gourami. what you think??

I think goldfish are coldwater fish and Gourami and Tigers are Tropical fish...need i say more? :)

Just to confirms ( as tizer seems unsure)

Goldfish are indeed cold water and the barbs and gourami tropical :good:

As people keep telling you in your other thread, the goldfish need to go somewhere else! ;)

Also, I'm not a goldfish person but I have a feeling a 29gal might be too small for two that size even if it was a coldwater setup.

1) Too small, as we've all said in your numerous other threads.
2) Different temp ranges means neither would be in ideal conditions.

STOP messing around now.

I wouldn't recommend tiger barbs with gourami's either, the barbs will nip the gourami's feelers and the gourami's are not fast enough fish to protect themselves from tiger barb attack.

5inches is not that big for a goldfish- all varieties have the potential to grow between 6-12inches (Koi goldfish hybrids can grow even larger) depending on the variety. I for example have a Common Goldfish that is 12inches long. For a goldfish which has the potential to grow to 12inches+, you need to get it a 5ft long by 2ft wide tank with heavy filtration (or an even larger pond) long term.

WTH, King? Are you just trying to test our collective patience? If so, please knock it off.

Either rehome the goldfish or dig yourself a pond to put them in. And tiger barbs should not be homed with any other fish that have long fins or feelers.

Are they koi or goldfish? If goldfish what kind? (Coy or koi is not a type of goldfish, comet, pond, fantail, oranda, etc. are types of goldfish.)

Goldfish are not true coldwater, they can go in a very wide temp range. How warm they can go depends on what type they are. Although the temp is not necessarily a determining factor, they do much better when only kept with goldfish and select other fish (a list that does not include gouramis or tiger barbs).

Making a bad decision on stocking and then asking over and over until you get the answer you want is not research. Research before you buy so you can make sure you have or can provide the best home possible.

goldfish dont HAVE to be in cold water, im not testing patience and half of you never even spoke up on the other thread so you cant say "we said this". im not asking anything about the goldfish im asking if the tigers would nip at the other fish and obviously they will so they are a bad choice. they are a fish i like and im RESEARCHING their behavior before throwing them in a tank. these gold fish are in a 55gal and they stay in the same 1 foot area ALL THE TIME, they dont swim around or interact with other fish or do anything. just figured i would give them a different home.

they have been in a tank with angels and gourami and have been just fine. i didnt BUY these things i "inherited" all of them in a tank together. the morons at the zoo wouldnt call me back so they didnt go there. the only other choice is to put them in someone i knows grotto where they will most likely freeze to death this winter. im trying to atleast keep them alive..

i didnt post this to get smart comments so you guys "knock it off" and "stop messing around now" ;)

Why not keep the Goldfish in the 55 gallon and then move the Dwarf Gourami to the 29? So you have a cold water and a tropical tank.

Despite the temperature requirements between the species I would not put barbs with Fancy Goldfish as Tigers do go for fins and even in a big group I think the Tigers would still go for the Goldfish.

OK First off,

The tank is too small for goldfish (so thats why you should exclude them from your decision making)

Secondly though (just so everyone is clear) Goldfish are not cold water fish, they are definately temporate, but with a very broad range (and a broad range within that curve that they can happily breed in succesfully) - a quick search of previous threads/google etc. can confirm this.

So, if the tank were larger, temperature would not be an issue.

However - Goldfish are messy, greedy and somewhat too physical for gouramis to handle. They would also present fairly docile targets for the attentions of tiger barbs.

A second point is the environmental (not just temperature) needs of the fish. You would need well oxygenated water with a reasonable flow for goldfish, while gouramis need a much more tranquil environment. Both gouramis and tiger barbs prefer plant cover, while goldfish will likely eat/up root live plants (and even plastic plants).

Simply put then, without too much criticism, you need to take your time and research not just the individual needs of the fish, but also, their likely interaction/housing needs - do they clash or do they fit?

Perhaps take a step back and think, what is it I really want to achieve with my aquariums?

That is all.

Have you answered what type of goldfish these are? This makes a HUGE difference in their care.

You didn't say you had called the zoo back, don't get mad when people didn't know that already.

Goldfish are not coldwater, they are arguably just as tropical as every other tropical fish we keep. But this doens't mean they can go in ANY tropical setup. As stated repeatedly we need to know what type of goldfish we are talking about.

thats all i was asking is if the barbs would disturb the other guys, i dont want to cause more newbie damage to the fish. thats why im trying to "plan" the tanks accordingly :good:

the goldfish are about the size of a womans fist and are white, orange, and black. thats what kind they are LOL. like i said i inherited these guys and they have been in a tank poorly cared for and NOT planned by the previous owner. they had those 2 in with 2 big angels, no thermo or heater, no test kit, NO PLANNING involved with it. they lived in harmony for several years through obviously swings of different temps and bad water and are still kicking and eating up everything they can. agreed they are messy and selfish. AND KEEP UPROOTING MY LIVE PLANTS! LOL.. still deciding what to do with them. thanks.
