ok ive given up asking questions about the actual fish so which sand is better

coral - to keep pH high

playsand - cheap

but price is no object

just to be clear

this is for a tanganyika shell dweller setup ??

How about 1 bag of Argonite and mix it in some play sand?

I use all Argonite (coral sand) in my Mbuna tank...no problems that i can think of :S

Shell dwellers will like the sand much better from what I have read and heard from people that raise these fish, currently in the proccess of getting some multies myself.I used pool filtersand from home depot it is a little bit coarses than play sand and a little darker I think, just make sure you clean it before you put it in your tank.it took me about 30 minuets to do it,no big deal and I really like the way it looks. The guy that I am going to get the multies from said that the only real problem with sand and shellies is they can figure out what the filter does and scoop up sand and spit it into the intake tube like it is a "blackhole" lol so a filter of some type on the end of it is recomended if yours is closer to the bottem of the tank.gl you could add some crushed coral over the top of the sand .

I just use regular marine sand. IF you use a buffer, you won't nto use other things to help keep the pH up. I paid $6.49 for 10lbs of sand. It said it is just marine sand straight form the ocean.

sorry has any one got a complete brand name?

lol i wana go with 'all marine sand' mixing is too much

look up caribsea they have different types of sands that u are looking for.

What is the KH and pH of your tapwater? If its hard and high like mine, and you are using limestone for the rocks and doing regular water changes, use whatever you want. Personally I normally mix up a few different grades of sand and grit/gravel as I like interesting substrate it creates.
