hello all, i recently purchased a breeding pair of convicts from my LFS. sure enough they did it. eggs almost immediately. about 30 -40 fry swimming in this ceramic cave that the parents are gaurding with their life. what can i feed them? do i need to? they must be about 10 - 14 days old. will flakes ground to a very fine powder suffice? i'm a very poor man but want to raise these little devils. please offer any opinion :look:

I only feed my convict fry regular flake food...I do not bother to grind it up and they are doing just fine.

i think most new world cichlids crush up the food before they feed it to the fry so just feed them normal food and they should be fine unless you move them away from the adults.

:good:

when I bother to keep my fry (ie remove them from a community tank to a fry tank) I feed them tetra colorbits tropical granules (flake doesn't grind as well) ground to a dust for small fry or teeny tiny granules from about 3-4 weeks on. I use a small mortor and pestle that cost me about $5

ty you all very much. i appreciate the responses. bad news. all fry died. everyone else is doing fine. the parents have laid another batch of eggs. anything you sugest i do differently this time?

There is no need to grind it up as the parents will chew some of it and spit it back out so it is small enough for them to eat :D

hello. is that true? most died again, but some are still living. they even have a new batch now! they are determined to breed. the fry almost always stay in this ceramic cave.

how big is your tank and what other fish do you have?

id be trying to work out why they all die if i was you.

i have convicts in my tank and the fry never die (damn them) and ive had 3 pairs spawn in the last 2 weeks.

i have to wait till they grow a lil then my oscar realises there food!

poor things lol.

hey fella:)

well the tank they are in now is segregated with other fish. been running for a couple years. they are seperated from the parents and are doing the best they have yet (new brood). i grind up bloodworms (dried) and they swim and eat before me! any tips i can do to make thing better? lighting? temp? etc. all i can keep them in now is the community tank breeding trap.

well i wouldnt worry about food. my tanks only a few months old and they ate fine so if your iis a few years old there will be plenty for them to pick at.

are you sure there not being eaten rather than dieing?

cos thats different as theres nothing you can really do about that except isolate them.

if thats the case a few are sure to survive. there good at hiding.

i have them seperated and isolated in a transparent container within. can't escape. first time i've done this. so far so good. just wondering if anything i can do to help them grow :D
