I have 2 black ghost knifefish and was hoping to get some shoaling fish, i was wondering if there are any which i could put in with them which are big enough and won't be eaten.

This is what two of what I have found to be the better sites for fish info have to say:

This species can be kept with without problems with peaceful fish not large enough to swallow. Be sure to provide retreats. This species should not be kept in pairs, although several fish can be kept in a large tank.

Although timid they are aggressive to their own kind but can be housed with other large peaceful fish such as Angelfish, Discus and Gourami.

Thanks, i do already have 4 discus in with them, the two BGK i have seem to get on fine, they both have there seperate areas, and they are in a 120cm x 45cm x 70cm.

Firstly keeping two BGK is a big no no, They should be kept alone (or unrealisticly in a large group) With two the weaker one is guaranteed to suffer throughout its life, and IMO you will end up with two average specimens rather than one thriving specimen (if you had gone with one)

As for tankmates anything not overly aggressive that is larger than 2-3" should be fine, Mines tankmates include the likes of colombian tetras, hoplo catfish, polypterus, a Severum etc. which shows the range of suitable tankmates there are,

From the list above I would avoid Leporinus and personally Anostomus (although you may have better luck than me) These two can be a bit too nippy, (leporinus especially are known for this) but generally the other tankmates mentioned should be fine, - Discus may be another tankmate to avoid simply due to their requirements which are almost the opposite to the BGK

Hi,

As has been said above, keeping 2 BGK is not a good idea.
When I got mine, the owner of a well known chain of LFS told me to go for 3, even though I had read that is not a good idea. I thought he should know what he is talking about. Needless to say it didn't end well....I now have 1.

I have Angels, Congo Tetras, Bleeding Hearts, Pearl Gouramis, Kribensis and various catfish with mine.
