Evening,

I'm totally new to the fish keeping world. I'm in the middle of cycling my new tank with a capacity of 110L / 29 US Gallons (80 x 35 x 50.3cm. It is going to be a community tank. It has a sand substrate, and will be lightly planted and have a nice hardscape with bogwood and rock.

I'm thinking about stocking and am thinking of the following:
  • 10 Neon Tetra
  • 8 Pygmy Cory
  • 4 Guppy (1 male, 3 female)
  • A few assassin snails donated from a friend
Is this a good number of fish for the tank? Room for more?

From what I've read there shouldn't be any issues with them living together in the tank (very similar temperature range, could all live with a PH of 7, none of them are aggressive).

Any other thoughts / advice / comments are greatly welcomed!

I plan on gradually increasing fish numbers once the tank is cycles - starting with the snails and Cory to get things going, followed by the Guppy and finally the Tetra.

Hi mate...welcome to the site! I'm a relative beginner myself!

How are you cycling? Fishless with ammonia I presume?...If so then you can, in theory, fully stock your tank once cycled, although be aware that some fish prefer established tanks!

Your stocking ideas sound good...certainly sensible...I'd say there's room for something else too...Maybe some sort of centre piece fish?

Hi MarlinMan

Yep, am in the middle of a fishless cycle with ammonia - just about to go an check the water in a minute actually......

Thanks for conforming that everythings good! Hmmm, will have to do a bit more research to find a star of the tank!

If I've read everything right on these forums, I dont think snails (or shrimp) add to the bioload... but assuming our tank can process 5ppm of ammonia in 12 hours (or less) then you should be able to fully stock. But, as Marlin said, some fish prefer established/mature tanks. That's why I only have tetras at the moment, the gourami I wanted prefers a maturer tank. So maybe do some research into that... also, you will need to feed the algae eaters, as your tank will not be producing algae at the rate they will need yet (although someone correct me on that point if I'm wrong).

I'm in the same boat, lol! I currently have a small shoal of Neon and Rosy Tetra and am just about ready to add some sort of centre piece fish but can't make my mind up! Initially we wanted a Betta but I've got a sneaky feeling my Rosys wouldn't approve! I'm now considering a pair of Dwarf Gourami or a pair of apistogramma (although not sure on which species to go for atm)...

Good luck

Dwarf gourami are really cool fish. I'm partial to angels but that doesn't make them a good choice for you.

That stocking sounds great George, but be wary that the Guppies would probably be more suited to a mature tank. Some of the hardier fish include Babrbs, Platties, Mollies, Swordtails etc. Plenty of choice, have a look at them and see if any take your fancy.

Apisto's would be a very good choice imo. They spend most of their time in the bottom half of your tank so would be a great fish to go with your Tetra's.

All in my own opinion of course :D

Guppys will breed like nuts, so unless you got another tank to put the fry in. I suggest you go with something else. But everything else is GooD :good:
