So i want to start on cichlids and i fell in love with cockatoos so have decided to set-up a tank for them in the near future.

I need care advise as i want to do this right, i was planning on a 40litre tank quite heavily planted, so how many? 1or 3 Is the tank even suitable? i am not particularly interested in breeding them as i wouldn't have the first clue about fry or where to send them (i could have a word at work i suppose)

Tank mates??? Are they even a good idea?

A 40litre will probably be the biggest i can go unless i find the room for a cheap 50 or something.

Any help will be appreciated.

hmmm even for a lone one?

How about a 50-60.

That would be a push but i could try, still want to know eveyones opinion on the 10 gal though.

I think you might be able to get away with a single one, but I am sure they would be happier in a trio, which a 15g would fit nicely.

Ok i see, hmmm trying to find records of them being kept alone but i can't surface any so far.

How about the breeding controling?

Ok i have found 5 sites saying 40litres is enough for a pair, nothing said about a trio in any but i know they are better off kept that way, am i right?

One site said 20litres but i'm no way buying that.

Yes, they are best kept in Trios. If they do start to breed simply dispose of the eggs. It really is up to you but I am pretty sure a 15 or 20 gallon would be better. Maybe someone else can chime in on tank size just to make sure.

I hope so, i've found one site saying they can be kept singulary or again in pairs in a heavily planted tank of 40litres plus.

I have no issues heavily planting but would deffinately appreciate forum members responses as i trust this place far more than any website.

Thanks for the replys by the way discus it's much appreciated :good:

Back to my research lol :book:

I think a trio can work in a 10? Agreed a 20 would be much better but I think there are a lot of users on here that have had success with a trio in a 10 some people have a small school with them as well in older tanks. Generaly I think people recommend Cacatuoides, Agazi, Nijsen or Panduro for a 10 if you look through older posts you will find advice :)

Thanks wills i have been trawling the net for hours lol.

Seems it can be done, i think i will give it a go and if they don't seem happy then i'll upgrade them to the 80litre community and the community can upgrade to something larger lol.

i have a pair og apisto in a 10g and there doing fine i think you could have a pair in a 10g aslong as u have alot of hiding places but not a trio

A pair would be fine in a 10gallon, but ot a trio. A 14 gallon would be better for a pair. A 16- 20 gallon is for a trio imo...
