just got some cobbles for my tank they look they there white they look like they have little crystals in will they be safe for my tank im in the process of washing them in boiling water

ill take your word if theres any problems or my fish die i no who 2 blame :P lol oj i might just take them in my LFS and double check tomorrow

thx

The vinegar test is pretty good but it doesnt account for the fact that some rocks can make a difference to your ph. I would leave them in some tank water overnight, testing the ph or the water before you put them in and again after 24 hrs to see if it makes a difference.

The only other thing I would say is, if they are white, be prepared to see them turn brown with algae for a while, as all (well most) new tanks go thru the brown algae faze within the 1st couple of months, its easy to wash off but unsightly.

if they are quartz you need not worry. and what makes you think the LFS will know any better, or even tell the truth? use the search function, but use the name "the-wolf i'm sure he had a very good pinned item on the subject. they will look green after a while though

There are two very common stones that are a white color. One is the quartz already mentioned as OK. The other is limestone which is far from acceptable. The day or two test that Minxfishy suggested is a much better indication of the likely impact of the cobbles in your tank.

white lime stone cobbles? if they were truly able to effect your tank, would they not crumble before they ever got to be cobbles/pebbles.

Limestone only dissolves very slowly in soft acidic water. It is found all over the world and is quite a common rock. Not knowing where your cobbles come from I can't know what environment they have seen.

yeh, got that. but how many of us use "soft acidic" water to keep our fish?. and if it is permeable enough to absorb any nasties it has met, it would have crumbled, before making it to cobble/pebble size. do you really think an LFS looks that closely into the source of the rock they sell. well no, many, dont. i know of one who uses b&q for the rocks it sells. and can you honestly say, that this LFS is any different to many others?
