I'm just wondering if adding more bi-carb etc could make the bubbles last longer at a higher speed.

I've played around with different mesures of the various substances, and now I mix 1 heaped tea spoon of yeast to 1 tea spoon of bi-carb, then the sugar and water as normal.

the bubbles come out realy well, then after about 3 or 4 days settle down to one every 3 to 4 seconds.

this is ok, but not as fast as when it's first mixed - just wondering if placing more of less of somethng would help?

Simon.

Hiya,

I'm currently experiment with my mixture.

1 heaped teaspoon of yeast sounds a lot, I'd guess that you need to reduce that....you may have less bubbles to start but overall should last longer. When you say sugar and water as normal, do you mean the markings on the hagen kit?

My latest trial is one flat teaspoon of bicarb, just less than one flat teaspoon of yeast and then sugar and water as usual. I'm getting about 1 bubble every 1-2 seconds. Not sure how long it's gonna last tho.

Sam

hiya, thanks for that - yes its the hagen, natural co2 one.

i do find my ladder gets a bit of whispy stuff on it - presumably the yeast coming slightly through the pipe - just needs wiping now and then to keep the bubbles going smooth. i might try filling to just below the water level marker too next time.

let me know when yours runs out, i did that and it lasted about 6 days then slowed.

I don't think you'll ever be able to make it last long and produce lots of bubbles. I think it's one or the other and trying to find an optimum.

What measurement of CO2 are you aiming for? I'm trying to get 30ppm. The first mixture I did I had 4ppm, then my second mixture was 54ppm :|, I quickly changed that and now the mixture I'm on was 18ppm on the first day and 22ppm yesterday. Haven't tested today.

I also got that slimy stuff, but haven't had it in ages now. Maybe it's the type of yeast...before I was using the sachets that came with it.

i was on 19 after 48 hours with the big mix (which is in now but slower) and im going to test again tomorrow.

i'll let you know. i think somewhere in the 20's is fine for me.

just tested it, im on 24 now with the mix i stated in my first post. this is after 4 days of having it in with a bubble every 2 to 3 seconds now.

i think i'll use lightly less water and change the yeast as this is "fast acting" so maybe it's running out fast?

I think houndour's right there Sime!

It's just trial and error until you find the mix that suits you best. Can be a bit frustrating, until you get it right.

It's a balance of CO2 production rate over CO2 production longetivity. The higher the rate the less the longetivity.

More yeast will boost rate if all other components (sugar, water etc.) are constant.

Less yeast will reduce rate.
