Clown Loaches In Brackish

This is a very interesting thread. I never knew that Clown Loaches would even tolerate water with a very low salinity.

Poopsydrew, I find it hard to believe that your store keeps all their tanks at SG 1.008. I would have thought nearly all the fish would die if exposed for some time. What is the need for such a high salinity? I'm sure salt at a much lower dosage would still hinder diseases. I think this is very bizarre.

Hi mlawason,
The salinity ranges, depending on who is adding the salt :p
Really though. We test it daily, it is not always as high as 1.008 but it has been there many times, never seen it lower than 1.004. Of course the accuracy of the hydrometer and other things come into play but it is still ridiculous.
I think it is bizare as well, and I make sure to let the manager know my distaste for the practice but its "policy"
Like I said, we DO lose A LOT of fish. But you have to remeber most of them are there for a very short period of time so even though the salinity may be harmful, I guess they see it as better than having a whitespot outbreak through the sump and killing of all of the tanks. UV sterilizers you ask? They broke years ago says the manager.

On a side note, when we do get disease it tends to be worse because, obviously, it is very tolerant of salt. Which then calls for a full dose of some strong medication leading to fish loss....I will say that we do not get diseases very often.

Oh the joys of working in a fish store

Im sorry if I went off on a little bit of a rant earlier, I just get a little defensive when people talk badly about/insult lfs employees. I really think it comes down to the individual.

P.s. I think I hijacked this thread long ago, sorry about that.

Its fine, but nobody has really answered my question yet. Does anyone know?
Again my apologies.
Clown loaches are very sensitive to salt and do not do well in salinity. The ones in our store never last very long, and I think this is due to the salinity in the water. I would save your money and skip the salt :good:
