ok in the book i have it says that they get 1 ft long but only need a 20gal tank missprint right? can i keep about 3 of them in a 40gl tank

yes they can reach 12" and the are schooling fish (min of 4 required)
therefor a tank of at lest 55 gallons is required for smal clowns
<6" and 75 galons for >6"

Well that's definately wrong. They can get to 12 inches but it usually doesn't happen. You could keep three in a 55 gallon, no smaller really.

They need a bigger tank but depending on what size you get them at they might be fine if your commited. They are slow growers, 1 inch a year, and like to be in groups of 3 or more. The do get big some reaching 12 inches, but more likly around 8 inches.

They grow pretty fast up to 6 inches and then after that they grow like 1 inch a year.

cool to bad though my mom wont let me get another tank i have 3 and im only 12 :p but im glad i did my home work

Actual the articles I read on loaches.com said they do grow somewaht fast to 3 inches then it goes to very slow 1 inch per year. Im going to do more research.

Mine grew fast to 6 inches, and other people I know say the same thing.
