Hi All

Back after a long absence - new job, new puppy and new motorbike been taking up all my time. New site looks great.

When I set up my 300l tank I wanted it to be almost zero maintenance. Managed to get this right but along with the MTS some other snails snuck in and have got completely out of hand. Now wreaking havoc wth the Amazon swords. Went to LFS today and they have a shipment of Clown Loach coming in tomorrow and I have asked him to put 4 aside for me for next weekend. I assume they will be on the small side but I have heard that they eat shrimp. Will my Amanos be safe? I have some that are fully grown and loads od babies. Not that fussed about the littluns but I enjoy watching the big guys - and they do a pretty useful job too :good:

i dont think so, i rekod the loaches would have them almost sraight away!

Adult Clowns will eat adult Amano shrimp without thinking twice so i'm sure the smaller shrimp will be at immediate risk.

The other thing that i wondering about is if they are true Amano shrimp as you have mentioned babies. Amano shrimp need salt water when young so if they have bred in the tank you have a similar looking species.

Hmmm I may be wrong about them having multiplied. I originally put 6 in and was pretty sure that a month or so ago I counted 8 all moving at the same time. I also thought I had seen minitures. But the tank is heavily planted and they move very quickly. They look exactly like pics of Amano shrimp and that is what they were sold to me as. I'm hopeless at estimating size through curved glass and water but the ones I have just been to watch are a bit longer than mature cardinals.

I keep 5 clown loaches all around 6 inches with 8 amano shrimp and have done for around 6 years and not lost one yet although there are some tall plants for the shrimp to escape. But each case is different and what works for one doesn't work for all.

Hi,

I have 5 clown loachs and 6 amano shrimp living in a rio 180, along with corries and common livebearers, the clowns live quite happily with the shrimp and I have had no fatalities.

Maybe it just depends on the individual fish mine dont bother anything else in the tank, maybe they are just amicable fish?

Generally speaking, the amano shrimp will be food for all botine-shaped loaches (skunk, yoyos, clowns, kubotai, zebra, etc.)
