Evening all, just had a surprising result cleaning out my youngests new (old) tank.

Filled it with very hot water, as in it hurts your hand but no more and a calgon tablet. Left it an hour and all the crusty white gunk just wiped away.

Looks cracking now.

Calgon is a descaler tablet for dishwashers I think

Yep, calgon express ball tab to be exact, goes inthe washing machine to clear/ prevent limescale and crud jamming up the machine.

Its not a deturgent tab, it doesent clean the clothes it keeps the machine clean.

As far as being fish safe, who knows. The tank i picked up yesterday or nothing was seriously filthy, tide lines galore. Also its only plastic so any hard core scraping would scratch it.

The tab removes limescale, so i gave it a go with some hot water. It doesent have any soap in it so no soapy bubbles. The white stuff wiped off with some kitchen roll after a 40minute soak.

Then i gave it a normal clean with some saly water, and dried it. Considering people bleach things in their tanks to be rid of algae i hardly think a water softener will harm the tank. Maybe use cooler water to protect the silicone?

There are a few people in this world that this WILL apply to so sorry to the rest of the normal people, DO NOT do this with fish in the tank.
