Classical Music And The Effect On The Human Brain

Classical for me definitely works. But best of all is Baroque in particular which is widely reported. There are many interesting studies and analysis reports to be found on the web to support this.

Hm, well when i was a kid my mother read this article on how classical music helped kids calm down and learn better and stuff- my mum really took this advice to heart and followed it through with me and my brother (it was supposed to be mostly for my brother as he was very hyper-active as a kid, but i ended up having to have the classical music treatment anyway). So for years i was made to listen to Classic FM (classical music radio channel), which to be honest really sucked back then- i did enjoy some classical music, but when you're 8 years old it does start to become mind numbingly fustrating/boring when you're made to listen to it everyday. So yeah, thats my classical music story, and yes, my family is a bit nuts.

I'm not sure whether classical music has any benefets for the soul or mind, but there are certainly a lot of masterpeices in classical music which are a lot more intelligently and thoughtfully composed than some of the rubbish you hear now days on the radio. However my tastes in music are very varied, everything from jpop to rock, dance and trance to hip hop etc etc- i even still listen to a bit of classical music every now and then. I think you should listen to what you like- music changes your mood, when i do art i often listen to music or a certain DVD to get me in the right frame of mind or mood to help express the emotion i want in my art etc.

I really enjoy listening to "classical" music when I study. And this is not because I'm a musician. For me, the best music to listen to for studying is anything contrapuntal (More than one independent melodic line working together rather than one melodic line with a subordinate chordal accompaniment), from the Middle Ages to the Romantic Era. When tonality (set chord progressions revolving around a central tonic key) starts to break down, as it did in the later-19th-20th centuries, I find it harder to concentrate. Stravinsky is not my favorite composer to study to, though I do love his music. I could probably do well with his Neo-Classical period compositions, but the ballets are hard to listen to when you're trying to work. Bach fugues are epsecially good, but so is a good Ockeghem mass (early Renaissance), or even the music of Guillome de Machaut (Master composer of late Medieval music and all in all, one of the great masters of music, period.). All of these pieces fufill the above definition of contrapuntal music. Opera is not as good, the voices and text can actually be distracting, well at least I get distracted. Renaissance and Medieval music work really well too, even though it's primarily vocal music, as the vocal lines are contrapuntal and it's hard to understand what they are singing in the first place.

To address a post from a little farther back, classical can mean two things. When it's not capitalized, it means the general definition that was defined which usually implies Western art music from usually the Middle ages to Present day. When capitalized, Classical music refers to a specific music movement that dates from around the 1750s with the opera reform music of Gluck, CPE Bach, and others and extends to the Beethoven's early to middle periods. Beethoven's late period, from around 1815-his death, is now often classified as either Early Romantic or Late Classical, depending on your frame of mind and which scholar you read. Within this time frame, there are further sub-categories, Pre-Classical, Classical, late Classical, early Romantic, etc. Musicologists, people who study music history, are forever categorizing and such. They are a very busy group.

Have I annoyed enough people yet? You should see me when I really get going. :hyper:

llj

haha - I grew up on our version of Classic FM and we were taken to endless concerts, Opera's, ballets etc. from a very very early age. In fact, never listened to any pop/rock etc. until my 20's! We also went to music school (after school) to learn a variety of instruments! All of that I never resented, enjoyed and appreciate very much.

I think that's a good point you know

if your listening to most western pop/rock/dance music (or whatever the youth of today is currently listening to  :p ) it's largley lyric based, if you like it it's fairly likely it's because you identify with something in the lyris and this is bound to catch your attention and distract you. Perhaps it's simply because the music is less vocal/lyric based that it is less distracting and therefore seems to help you to concentrate.

Lol same here, i could watch tv but my mother deprived me of it a lot of the time, no pop or rock music allowed in the house or anything either- my mum was pretty old fashioned in her ways when she brought me and my brother up, she was very strict. Hehe, but all her work has been undone now, kinda rebelled a lot when i was a teenager. Lol she still goes on to me about my clothes when i visit her (she still tells me to wear longer skirts or shirts buttoned all the way up to the neck etc) even though its been about 6 years now since i moved out of home. But i guess thats what mothers are like though no matter how old you get, you will always be their daughter lol.

..music changes your mood...

I couldn't have said it better! :good:

Thanks :good: .

I sing in madrigal (Renaissance) and Concert Choir choirs at school and i find that i work my hardest and do my best work after choir class.
I am also in a more cheerful mood after choir class. The satisfaction of singing in 8 parts German is a real lift to my spirits.

Death Metal makes me think better during homework.

I just thought I'd throw that out there.
