Hi

What cichlids can I put in a 4 foot tank (47 gals) ?

What other fish can I put with these, eg. angel / shark / guppies / platies, etc?

Basically I want a community feel but with cichlids as the main fish.

thanks x

come on guys - need some help here, dont be shy!

angels are cichlids,
all depends on what you want really,
i have a breeding pair of angels about 5 guppies and a pair of bristlenose plecs in a 3ft
sarja cichlids are beautiful :good: with about 12 colombian tetras and a bristlenose plec :good:

A nice pair of Bolivian Rams for the bottom of the tank would be nice too.
personally i love the electric yellow cichlids, peacocks and orange cichlids.

if you want non african i would go with the fire mouth or convict. Convicts are great with their young, but then again, all cichlids are from what i have noticed.

i agree convicts are great with their young but to the detriment of the other fish. if you want a community feel something like rams, kribs, angels, festivum, firemouth or maybe the gentle giant the severum. most of these would be good options but you must bear in mind that if a fish can fit in a mouth it normally will end up in it. On the subject of rift lake cichlids i believe they are best kept with other rift lake cichlids

Agreed. :good: If you are wanting cichlids with community fish you'll want to stick with New World or South American cichlids, though some of the African Riverine would work as well. Any of the cichlids from Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganikya should be avoided (that includes the electric yellows, and peacocks).

maybe you can get some African cichlids and make it an Mbuna tank

Mbuna tanks are my favorite, however, the OP stated he wants a community tank with cichlids as the center-piece, so mbuna won't work. :good:
