Hi folks, i am new to this site and the hobby.. but i have put quite a bit of research in.

I Have a 60L tank(would like a bigger one but don't have the room) its has a bog standard Eheim internal filter and is kept at 25c has a 7.5 ph with very slightly hard water. I have just ran a fishless cycle and all my readings are good. It is decorated with natural substrate ,rock and has a good covering of artificial plants.

i have worked out the tank should hold about 70 cm of fish and today i went and made my first purchase of 5 cherry barbs... 3 female and 2 males, i have read that they like to shole and that 2 males put on quite a display. Fully grown i think they take up about 20 cm giving me 50cm to play with. i would like to get some Tettra's but apart from this has anybody got any idea's what make good chums with my barbs.

ideally bottom feeders middle tank and top that feeders that would suit my habitat and water chemistry.

also whats people opinion on artificial plants V real?

Do i need to upgrade my filter?

sorry if i have asked stupid questions and sorry about my spelling! I did ask some of these questions at my lfs but when he said you could not tell the difference in male and female cherry barbs i knew he was a dumb #16##### or at least not trained up.

I am away of to do a bit of fishing... is that a faux paux with u guys and girls. lol

Well, firstly, let me say Welcome to our forum and also announce to you, that you are our 50,000th member to join this forum ... congratulations on this unperceived "achievement.

2ndly, I like the way you've done your homework and research before finalizing your choice of which fish to keep... you are on the right track and will get plenty of help from our members who are all very knowledgeable....

3rdly..... Uhm!!... you'll notice that we are rather conservative on the use of strong (sometimes fittingly descriptive) words on this forum.... hence the hashes replacing your word for your #16##### dumb fish.... if ever you see these, just go back and replace it with a more fitting and acceptable word.

Then... finally... you've joined the best forum in the world and we love angling and of course photos... you do not sound like a novice, so.... interact and share your experiences and photos with the rest of us..... Welcome again!

50,000 member eh! maybe i should do the lotto!

i have read back on my post and i thought that maybe some of you would think "why dont you just look at good comunity fish". i have done that, but i was just wondering if anybody had a specific combination that worked for them in a similer enviroment.

Hi fishytag and Welcome to TFF!

In the area of stocking lists, one of the most significant things that stands out about cherry barbs is that they are nearly the only barb that is truly beginner friendly in a mixed community tank. Unlike Tigers or Rosys or other barbs, they will not harass their tankmates practically to death. I don't know that I can think of a particular fish that is magically the best tankmate for Cherrys because they are pretty good with all sorts. Like many fish (but not all of course) they work best in a minimal grouping of 6.

Cherry Barbs like plenty of thick planted hiding places. Like many other fish they will relax and come out more to be seen when they feel they have plenty of plant cover. So your planned tank might be a good one for beginning to explore the world of live plantings!

I have 4 cherry barbs. Two which are bright red (males) and two which are an orangy/red/...(females). They mix well with all of my fish.

If you are looking for smaller type fish, then i'd recommend some Xrays, they are very plaful and always out, never hiding. Although they are the hardest to catch if you ever need to get the fish out!
