I've been recommended water change wise to a do a couple a year, however have other fish atm so doing weekly until i get rid of the other ones.

I do mine every forthnight bu tI want to kick on and breed these this summer so will leave the water then?
 
snakeheads are happy with very infrequent water changes and some say they are happier without water changes!, personally i just suck up excess food and stuff from the bottom then just top it back up, no massive water changes by any means! maybe as little as 5% every other week.
you could keep the tropical Channa at room temp. if your room is a constant 24 Celsius at least, which most aren't, so you most probably will require a heater.
