Changing Over...for Sure This Time

my tank is a 50 gallon 4ft tank im going to be putting in rock work tonight its cycled it was going to be an oddball tank but my mom and dad have talked me out if it, i was wondering if i could have an open top tank? if not i will get a hood this weekend. im not sure what fish i want yet, i was hoping for some of your imput.

as for open top, it's up to you really, the problem often is that in winter you lose your heat faster which leads to problem 2, evaporation! with a lid not as much of both escapes and theres always the chance of a fish commiting fishAcide. I've had a 55 uncovered for 3 years and never lost a fish (knock on wood)....

fish choice is up to you also, do you want color, tons of activity, spawning (whole bag o worms there)
my suggestion is first find out what your tap water PH is. test it straight out of the tap and bring the results back here, we'll go from there

well.. i think its a better idea to put a top on.. and who says you need to go pay a lot for one.. go to a glass cutter and have them make you one. it will look a lot better than one you can buy. cut around your filters etc. for me that would be WAY cheaper.. but thats just me. my fish like to jump sometimes.. i seldom but sometimes here them wack themselves on the top haha.. and i will say it evaporates water Fast.. in a weeks time my tank loses about an inch of water .. my hospital tank at least. but thats the only reason i see... but yeah you should really look into the glass top.

thats a great idea i would have never of thought of that. but i just went and got one, now i just need to get a moonlight and im good for lights.
my ph is around 7.8 out of my tap and about the same in the tanks.

as for fish, i dont know yet.. i would like some colour and i want lots of activity and i would like some spawning to.. can i have it all? ahah
but to start off i just want say 3 or 4 groups or pairs of fish. i will have two "deluxe aqua tech 30-60 on my tank..but right now i have 1 as the other one sit on my moms convict tank as her new filter cycles. each one of these filters turns over 330 gallons per hour or so the box says.
