Changing Gravel?

im just curious to know how easy it is to change gravel in a tank that already has fish init? and how would i go about doing it? its a 60 liter tank. also can anone recomend any good gravel, that is black and has really fine small bits

hi there,

it can be reasonably easy to change gravel. you can either move you fish to a large container or other tank, in tank water of course and with your filter running. then remove/change the gravel in the other tank. this may be less stressful for your fish. you could also remove/replace the gravel a bit at a time using a cup/bowl as a scoop.

roman pea gravel comes in reasonable small sized bits. what about trying black sand??

thats wha i was thinking i could do, i have a 5 gallon bucket which i could use, i was thinking about sand but i dont know where to get any black sand from or how i would go about adding that to the tank either

i had to add a sanded area to my tank for my corys. once the sand has been rinsed it becomes sort of compacted and can be added to the tank using the method described above. have a look on the net for black sand but be careful what you are getting as i believe the likes of coral sand can alter ph/water hardness.
