Blue/threespot, gold, opaline, honey, pearl. Those types will be fine in a 48g tank. The first 3 are actually all the same fish (trichogaster) but some people report opaline as more peaceful and slightly smaller of the 3.

I would do the opalines or apistogramma. Cacatuoides is a good beginner dwarf cichlid. They come in many color strains also. I would do a single opaline, or a pair of apistogramma.

Opaline, i have one in my tank he gets on happily with the guppy and as far as i know he hasn't even bothered with the fry that appear
