Carpet Of Algae On Sand?

What on earth, well sand is it?

I have a thin layer of dark emerald green coloured algae growing on the top of my sand, it started around my Crypt Bekketti.
I have tried syphoning it all out and even sieving the sand with the net to get rid of it.
It still comes back.

I am starting to like it though, but with all the holes that the loaches dig in the sand its starting to look silly.
Any ideas of what it is or how to deal with it and about it?

It'll be a case of light and/or nutrient availability

How much light do you have, and how big/deep is the tank?

Do you have many plants to compete?

Hi,

It sound like cyanobacteria, have a google and see if the images looks similar to yours...

Can be a pain to get rid of, but you can start to remove it by sucking it out with a tube each time you do a water change, increasing the water circulations and limiting the amount of time the light is on.

If this is what you have there are many articles on the internet which should help you solve what the cause is in your case.

Is it solely around your crypts? It sounds like its the waste product from them melting. I had it in one of my tanks when I used play sand.
