I was at Home Depot yesturday buying potting soil when I saw these giant bags of activated carbon pellets (for gardens) that to me looked identical to carbon marketed for Aquariums (Minus the beefed up prices). Does anyone out there know if I can use this stuff in my filters? It's just regular untreated activated carbon. And it's CHEAP! :hyper:

Activated carbon is activated carbon is activated carbon. It is the same stuff.

What you gotta be careful of though, is other additives like fertilisers, pesticides etc... It should say on the packet. I would think it is probably alright to use  .

Thanks -- it didn't say anything was added but I think I'll contact the company to ask to make sure. Man I'm gunna save a bundle of $$$ !

Unless I have a particular need, I don't use carbon in my filters. It doesn't stay "active" very long, and there are far better media for bacteria to grow on.
