Carbon In My Filter

So, my water is driving me mad because the wood I added over 2 months ago, i'm going to get a bag of carbon for my filter.

Can I buy a small bag of carbon thats for a differnce filter than what i'm going to use it for... and it will still do it's job?

Simply, squeeze it into my built in hood filter and leave it there?

How long do you leave it in your filter for, and do I need to wash it befor adding it or anything?

Carbon i think is a waste of time and money,its good for removing medication but thats it....In my oppinion in looses its life very quickly and also not the best thing to have if you keep cichlids....washing is advised as very dusty...What is the actual problem?if its tanning from the wood then seriously dont worry fish love it and it looks better in my oppinion

I'd have to agree with nelly. Carbon is great at removing meds and other impurities, but once it hits water it's only active for 3 days. After 3 days it would need replacing and that can get expensive.
