Cannister Filter Poll

All I can say is:

Fluvel 304 - Bought whan first came out (Around 5 years ago), Never leaked, Never failed

BUT

Would be after a eheim next time (But thats more because its more affordable for me now but 5 years ago would have been way 2 expensive ... Was married lol)

i have a fluval 205 for my 20gal it works well, can be a bit noisy :/ but never leaked or anything else but i want an eheim next time its just hard to afford when your only cash comes from a paper round :(

its not on your list i know, but i've got an Intrapet Hydor prime 30, not the quietest true. but its never failed is easey to clean, self priming and bits are cheap to buy.

I have to say I bought a Fluval 205 a few months back. Evidently hagen have listened to problems and changed a few of the common flawes. However this said I had intended to get an eheim. I rang around for I think the 2236 and found one stockist within an hour and a halfs drive. Asked proprietor what time he closed, was 5.30. Anyway long story short is that I got there at 5.13 to be precise and the owner had locked up and gone. A couple of young lads stood outside said they could do nothing as the boss had the keys. After driving for 1 hour and 13 minutes to get somewhere in rush hour traffic and then to have them close early made me change my mind about spending money there. Anyway I may have cut my hand off to spite my face but bought the fluval instead. No problems so far!!

We have two Ehiems on the 6ft tank and they suck the world out of it, it's the most efficient filter I have ever seen.

Used a fluval 405 on my 5ft tank ,started to leak.now using a eheim 2229 filter, alot better. 405 was a pain to start and to seal correctly.I also have a fluval FX5 on a 7ft tank (setup not quite finished).
I would not recommened the 405

I have several Eheim canisters; the biggest problem is getting past the price. They run seemingly forever, and are totally silent. They have a good reputation for a reason. I deal with machines that include pumps for a living; you can tell the quality of them just by looking at how they are manufactured, as well as predicting any problems by looking over the design. Many other canisters have design flaws, ranging from water bypass as the media gets dirty, to poorly manufactured extruded plastic pieces that are just waiting to leak.

I do have some issues with some of the Eheim designs. The Classics are an excellent filter, the small intake pipe on the bottom will probably snap off with rough handling, and they could have beefed up the small metal clips on the side. The Eccos could use a stronger pump, but they are meant to be an entry-level filter. The Pro & Pro II line are totally overbuilt, the only problem is the little flow indicator ball in the Pro II's. Take it out, and you will have better water flow.
