? could i turn off the sponge filter at night even if the sponge is still in the water? will the bacteria still be ok?

Hi, bacteria needs oxygen also to survive which is supplied by the water flow.

I am not saying the bacteria will die off over night but it's best not to turn off any filter.

You could reduce the flow, as sponge filters are mainly bio filters, which don't require a lot of water flow. One bubble per second will keep it running just fine at night.

how can i do that? its a tetratec air pump suitable for 60l but the filter is only in a 20l

Get a gang valve with two outlets, bleed off some air.

ive got one of them. thing is its the pump making the noise not the water movement

Ear Plugs  .

I guess we have so many running that we've just got used to any noise and don't really notice it anymore.

Placing it on a sponge often works, as does suspending the pump from string. Getting a length of air line & running the pump in a closet or another room works well, just make sure it is not in such an enclosed area as to lead to dangerous heat buildup. A larger size empty dresser drawer is a good example of safe, one full of clothes is unsafe.

Sit the airpump on a block of polystyrene, or put it in a small thick polystyrene box ( no lid on it ) to dull any vibration.

I must say, we run about 3 tetratec pumps and they are the quietest we have.

one of mine sat on a clean wad of toilet paper for a while, not the classiest thing but it kept it quite. I have also hung it on a string from the cloths rack in downstairs bedroom closet.
