Can We All Stop Jumping On Everyone?

The trouble is if you end up flaming the new members they aren't going to bother coming back to the site. A lot of people need help and advice and it doesn't cost to be polite. It would be best helping members and making sure that they get things right. Fishkeeping is meant to be an enjoyable thing and sharing advice is no hardship. We all have to learn somewhere and getting help from people with experience is a fantastic thing for members.
On the other hand, people asking advice and going against it even though it may cause distress to their fish is very frustrating. We all want whats best and if they are not prepared to listen then maybe they should take up a new pastime.

...... some members are 13 years old, while others are 30 years old .....

Some of us are a good deal older than 30 - it's you youngsters who fly off the handle at the drop of a hat - or at the hint of a criticism :p

I don't think the thread is pointless if it makes even one person think a bit more about their replies. :good:

I was just making an example, however its because of the younger members here that we have to be careful in what we say- most people who are 13 years old will have the mental maturity of a 13yr old. It can be difficult chatting on a forum, when one moment you are talking to someone who is 45 years old and the next moment you are trying to explain something to someone who is 14 years old. A lot of the time you will not even know the persons age.
Thus, you should take no-one for granted, especially given that most new members on this forum take some time to fill out their profile information, and even then may not fill out any of the important details like age, gender, fish tank stocking etc.

I think we should all give Wilders a round of aplause. For the amount of times and people she has helped. She must of said the same thing over and over again.

Wow, you know I never thought about whether Wilder was male or female. I guess that's the meaning of ass/u/me, eh?

I second the round of applause for Wilder. SHE is an amazingly patient and helpful person.

Some of us are a good deal older than 30...

Indeed.

I suspect that there is a lot of frustration from answering the same questions over and over and over again. I think the first 10 times that you point out to members that they shouldn't be keeping that bala shark and clown loach in a 10G tank, you have a good nature about you, but afterwards when the same type of thing keeps coming up, patience runs short.

I do not know how wilder keeps his cool when he sees my posts in the emergency forum :)

The other part is that it's all to easy to be mean in this format. We never have to see or meet the people we're talking to. People tend to be much much different in a web forum than in person.

If you find it fustrating answering the same questions over and over again, then simply don't answer them- there are thousands of people on this forum, chances are that if you don't reply to a thread, then someone else will sooner or later (especially if it is a really easy question to answer because it is asked so often) over the following days.
Either that, simply copy and paste info from the pinned articles (there are so many pinned articles on the forum now, most of them cover all of the most commonly asked questions) or link people to them.

Wilder spends a lot of time in the emergency section because she doesn't mind helping people out with the same issues over and over again because she knows that by helping people out, she is helping save their fishes lives a lot of the time. Wilder certainly contributes a lot to the forum, if she didn't share so much of her time here i'm sure that thousands of threads would have gone un-answered.
She has her own reasons for doing what she does, and her own methods of ignoring the fustration of seeing the same sorts of threads being posted every week.
However, when it comes down to it, no one has to reply to anything in any of the threads or posts made on the forum, so just try to keep that in mind if you see another "bala in the 10gal" type of thread :) .

Yes sometimes it is hard to be patient, but I wan't to help the fish keeper and the fish.
Don't wan't to risk the fishkeeper getting angry and going away, as to me that the worse thing to do.

hi,i've read loads of threads today, and im appalled at the way some of the newer members are being spoken to.we should be offering sound and helpful advice not ripping everyones tank to peices.your all telling me none of you keep clown loaches in the wrong size tank????i'm surprised at how these new members stand being spoken to like a peice of rubbish.come on everyone.this is the best forum by miles.stop being horrible to new members and start helping a bit more.

Not me. I don't do jumping cos I have arthuritis  :-(

Thank you! That's the exact same thing I was thinking. If you get sooo frustrated by something as simple as the same questions being asked over and over then just ignore them and go on to something that interests you more. When just starting to keep fish there are alot of common problems that come up for many different people. And alot of times when someone's fish is sitting there dying they want a response to their situation as soon as possible, thats why they come here and post a thread.

Its a good thing we have people like Wilder that are actually here to help. Its a shame everyone doesn't have the same attutude.

Thanks everyone but i'm not a saint  , just like helping sick animals out, plenty of time on my hands now the children are grown up.

I agree. Sometimes we just get up on the wrong side of the tank; or generally have had a really bad day.

@fenwoman - feel your pain (literally) - I was diagnosed with AS 6 years ago - when I was 31.

Living in constant pain puts many things in perspective - especially when people start bitchin'. -_-

I dunno if it's me folks are talking about - I do have a habit of telling it how it is, but it's not intentionally rude. If someone says "I've got a pacu in my 20g" then what are folks supposed to say - "Oh that's nice dear!"

Just wanted to add to the list of those in pain - living on disability benefits possibly permanently with SPD (symphysis pubis diastacis/dysfunction) and unstable sacroilliac joints. I also have 5 kids (including triplets who turn 4 tomorrow), and am very stressed due to the Chrimble time and my currently crap pain relief. I dont ever get to go out because I cant walk much at all, I can potter round the house but outside I need crutches, and even then rely on taxis. The pain gets so bad I just cant face going out any more - which in turn makes me moody and depressed. Sorry :-(

So just wanted to say sorry if I come across as brash or rude, it is unintentional - I just like to state the facts and be honest with folks, sometimes it's hard for them to understand.

Hello, I am fairly new here, I don't most much, mostly I can find answers to my questions if I read the pinned articles and other peoples questions!

I belong to another forum that "jumps" on people way worse then here, you are barely allowed to write anything without some one giving you a nasty reply. there are now so many rules and restrictions there that it is no fun to post there.

I know to some of you this place has some bad threads(rude snappy etc), but from an outsiders viewpoint its not that bad and certainly very imformative.

The thing with fish keeping is there will always be some poor Oscar stuck in a 10 G and Gold fish in betta bowls, and periodically people who know what they are talking about get annoyed.

don't let the waves get so big that they change the forum completely. so long as you still get new members that stick around its all good.

happy Christmas (just to annoy the cynics ;) )
