I am sad to say that Thalassoma pavo is a coolwater species that will not thrive for more than a season in tropical temperature waters. :(

However there are many tropical Thalassoma wrasses that look similiar, such as the Banana T. lutescens. Also a coolwater tank is always an option, but it will restrict your livestock choices somewhat unless you live by the sea and have easy access to native animals.

As for your mystery fish, could it be a snapper or wrasse of some kind? Your description did not ring any bells of mine. :dunno:

My favourite (home aquarium compatible) fish is either the Pinktailed Trigger Melichthys vidua or the "Chestnut" Moray Gymnothorax tile. Melichthys niger are a common sight around the waters off Hawai'i, as I myself deduced when snorkeling there. :)
