hi all. i have got a 300 gallon tank housing 18 discus, 60 cardinal tetra, 1 alligator plec, 8 sterbai cory and 4 redhead eartheaters.

can i add some jewel cichlids Hemichromis bimaculatus or am i asking for trouble

very big tank and sounds fantastic. stick some pics up please I;m in process of setting up a discus tank

I wouldn't personally add the jewels despite the size of the tank. If you really wanted to add more cichlids you could add Rams , Keyholes

Maybe someone will tell you different but I wouldn;t risk the investment of what is probably a very happy tank

Is Discus still counted as a cichlid? If so, it's south american and a jewel would be African...............according to others, SA and African shouldn't be mixed but then again with a 300 gal tank..............

Hopefully someone with the knowledge can give a better answer :good:

I'd agree with simonas :good:

my concern would be how aggressive Jewels get when breeding which they will do if you get a pair

Aren't jewels also known for being anti-plant friendly

I wouldn't risk discus with bigger cichlids, like suggested before. how about dwarf cichlids?

i am on the look out for some electric blue rams too

There are some on ebay, maidenhead also sell pairs for £35 (not sure how they sex them). From what I understand, Elec blue rams are extremely sensitive to water perimeters and that people have had issues keeping them

i know they do best in soft acid water and ive got hard water and ph 7.5

beautiful! I could see you having some apisto agrazzis, cacatouides and GBR in there

Hi I wouldnt mix the Jewels with discus its just not worth it it really could go hideously wrong very quickly. I was in a pub the other day and it had a tank with jewels and oscars in and the jewels were beating the oscars pretty horrifically there are better options for that size tank :) Like Satanopercas, Severums, Headstanders, Uarus, True Parrot Cichclids (not the hybrid parrots) Angel Fish, some species of Pike Cichlid work work as well.

I would defo not add the jewels I sadly returned my beautiful pair today.
I have Discus and did have a large number of large Cardinal Tetras which began to dissapear after my Jewels grew to full size.
Also although they did not damage my Discus they did set up their territory across the middle front of my tank and pushed the Discus to either side and they began to look stressed and unhappy.
I had mine for about 6 months and thrived in same water parameters as the Discus and did not damage any plants although at feeding time they are aggressive and very greedy my Discus can hold their own but these things are crazy!!
What about German Rams or Kribs these I have kept with Discus fine and keep their territory fighting to themselves and will not harm the Tetras and are interesting to watch.
