Can I Use Live Bamboo In My Tank?

No...It's not an aquatic plant, if you mean tall bamboo growing past the surface of the water then it depends on the species of bamboo and how deep the water is. Also note that bamboo grows fast and the part growing out of the water will need to receive good light.

Or are you talking about 'lucky bamboo'?

Well lucky bamboo isnt actually bamboo, its Dracaena sanderiana, just like the non-aquatic plant that LFS's like to sell as aquatic.

It grows really well in my 2 tanks, but the leaves need to be above the water or it will rot and it needs good light the same as any aquatic plant. I had a 11 watt arc pod over mine and it grew well (roots in ADA aquasoil), now I have in direct sunlight and plian gravel it's starting to go yellow - it will adapt given time though.

But it really does need light, and given how your supposed to place aquariums away from sunlight you will probably have to provide one for it :good: .

A word of warning it is potentially poisonous (poisonous to cats, dogs and i think I recall reading lizards too) if any fish try to eat it, but if it's just the stalk in the water you will be fine.
