sand is nearly better than gravel in my experience with cleaning

you simply use a gravel vac and do small swirls over the sand and this kicks the dirt up into the suction. You loose tiny amounts of sand most of which you could scoop back in if you really wanted.

But with sand the dirt lyes on the top layer of sand...with gravel it sinks in between the gravel. so with sand it is easy to see the dirt
