Buying Fish Online?

I can't really help you in the US, as I live in Aust, and only just dipped my toe in fish shopping online. However before making my purchase I did study the site often and read both good and bad testimonials that they had posted about themselves. Also they were very quick to send via email a response to my order and also sent a further email stating the tracking number of my order so I would have a better idea of where my fish and plants were along the way in transit.
Research will be your friend here so find out all you can about the company/ person you are planning on buying any fish etc off. The fish site I used also had a contact email address where you could post queries and again they where always prompt in sending a reply and not just some computer generated one.

I live in England, I have just got 2 discus from a breeder, but he did overnight delivery so lower stress. I did also know exactly what fish i was buying, as i got sent pictures so that i could select them. They are fine, he triple bagged them each in singles, in a polybox. 1 has nipped fins poor thing, but hopefully he will be alright soon.
I have heard stories of people buying of the internet and the fish dying though, i haven't heard this happen if you buy from a breeder, but if they are bought from ebay or websites. Honestly i didn't like the idea of sending the fish, i would rather go pick them up myself.

Hi bud, where is this place you made your online purchase from? A link to there site would be good. I`m in Vic and in a couple of weeks I`ll be looking at buying some more fish. I wouldn`t mind having a look at this place where you did a online purchase.

My fish all arrived alive and healthy and the corydoras julii went straight into feeding mode once I let them out of the bag after acclimatisation. The Sparkling gouramis of course hid immediately but are now starting to show themselves more regularly and starting to really colour up. The plants were all nice and healthy and devoid of snails (yeah). I don't know if they tried to give me pairs of the sparkling gouramis but so far it looks as though I have a male and possibly 3 females. As one has much broader fins and more colour with a really solid line while the others have a more broken line, and 2 are always hanging out together. Time will tell ultimately.

i believe in the us you have tangled up in cichlids and you have mike from h20 awuatics who sells some top notch sting rays.
I've had mixed results with online fish.
When I set up my Malawi tank I got 2 batches of fish from a breeder some distance away.
Was a good experience. All fish were ok, and the quality was excellent.
When I packed in the Malawis and went for general tropicals, I got some mail order Angels. to cut a long story short, it was a bit of a disaster.
But I got a 2nd batch of Angels from another breeder, and those were fantastic.
I would say, make sure you buy from someone who has a lot of experience shipping fish.
And also, if possible, see what his other customers think of his fish.

I do buy fish on line at times. So far I have been using Aquabid but each vendor on that site is independent so there is no consistent satisfaction from one vendor to the next. Another caveat is that many of the vendors are located in Asia and do nothing to deal with customs here. That means that you may or may not be breaking the law buying from them. If you read their statements, they say things like you must do whatever to deal with customs, they are not involved. You might get away with buying fish from Hong Kong or similar places several times before they catch up with you but I really don't need to deal with smuggling charges myself, so I avoid those particular vendors.
