These are one species where it is absolutely critical to see the health of the fish before buying. Many (most?) dwarf gouramis are infected with various bacteria, such that the moment they leave the fish farm (where they use antibiotics) the fish get sick. The sickness is incurable. The symptoms are consistent: lethargy, lack of appetite, sores of the skin, then death.
So, when buying DGs, you need to check that the entire stock is healthy, and that none of the fish show any symptoms of sickness. Ideally, track down locally bred specimens (e.g. through a fish club). Definitely don't buy the cheapest or specimens from a place with a poor track record of fishcare (like a pet superstore), and seek out an experienced tropical fish retailer that you can trust.
Yeah, I agree - and besides just about EVERY fish shop has these - or access to them. Get your dealer to get some in - let them settle for a week or two, then choose one.
