Heard some strange noises then smelt a burning smell. The filter seems to have blown, doesn't work anymore - so I've taken it out (got an external running too). But also the heater was on, and is very hot - are they normally very hot or should I keep that out too?

Paul.

If the filter isn't running the heater will get hot as the water isn't circulating round it any more. Its probably safer to turn off the heater and get a new filter pump first thing tomorrow from an LFS. The easiest way to keep the tank warm would be to wrap the it in a duvet to keep the heat in.

The other option would be to get the heater outside the filter box and fix it to the back or side of the tank with some spare clips if you have any.

If you think the external filter will be enough its probably cheaper to buy clips for the heater (or a new heater) than buying a new pump for the internal. If your not keeping the internal filter i think its the best to put the sponges into the external filter so you don't lose any bacteria.

Cheers dude. I was gonna get rid of the internal sooner or later anyway. It's not that old though, maybe a year, why did it burn out? Going to leave the heater out till the morning, at least I can sleep then without being paranoid of causing a fire. Incidently, would the broken filter caused a fire if I'd not been there and noticed it?

I doubt it would of caused a fire as it is totally submerged in water in the tank :p

But if the heater got too hot it wouldn't of done the fish any good.

No idea why it burnt out but its got me worried, my Vision 180 is second hand and was used for about 18 months by the previous owner... Mine could be due to break

I've already replaced the heater because it was making a worrying noise.

Just to show the other side of the story - I ran mine for nearly 10 years (before fitting an external), without a problem. So don't get paranoid about it. Anything electircal can fail, at any time, whether it be 10 seconds, or 10 years old.

I'm not aware that these pumps are prone to this type of failure.

(Waiting now for a stream of posts saying that Juwel pumps/filters/heaters are crap  )

I wonder if 'pauly's' impeller got jammed, and caused the overheat?
