Hi there marsh. Not enough info. You're going to have to supply the members with lots and lots of details to help them get started.

Tank volume, tank dimensions, type of test kit you have, how long since water was first put in it, fish that are in, type of substrate, how substrate was cleaned, type of filter, type of filtration media in filter, other things in tank... lots and lots of stuff!

it is a 90 litre tank with a fluval u2 100 litre pump approx 36x18x12 i think.it has a sand base and a rock formation for fish to hide not much else in way of decor. i have 3 baby angels 3 red guarammies 1 guppy.appologies for any spelling mastakes.

How often do you clean the filter and what do you do when you clean it?

How much water do you change each week and do you use your siphon tube to clean the sand surface when you change water?

I'm confused about your tank dimension numbers. If they are inches, the calendar (up top on our web page) says your volume should be one thing and if they are centimeters it says the volume should be something else and neither matches 90L at all!

i wash the filter sponges in the water i take out the tank when i change the water.i do this once a week i do use a siphon on the sand and change about 25-30% of tank volume.the dimensions are 32x11x17.

OK, we're getting somewhere! Tank dimensions are adding up to 98L/26G tank and it sounds like you've got pretty good maintenance habits there. So nothing is jumping out to explain the "brown water" quite yet... er, you say brown in the title but "cloudy" in the post. Is it a milky white cloudy? That could mean a "bacterial bloom"... or "yellow brown" water could mean you have wood that is giving off tannins. Do you have any wood in there?

Now we need more info: How long has the water been in the tank? How long have the fish been in?

i have had the tank about 10 weeks and added the fish slowly they have all been in the tank for about 5 weeks.i dont have any wood in there but the water is sort of brown yellow its hard to describe. i also use a nutrafin test kit which tests ph,ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, which when tested all show up normal on the charts. :S

Are you -sure- there's nothing else in there (decorations? unusual substrate?) that might explain the yellow/brown water? There's got to be something causing it. Perhaps you should set aside a plain jar of some of your source water.. maybe its something funny about the water supply itself..

got it sorted i did not know there were 3 sections in my filter  and was only cleaning two parts.i feel like a proper fool.the water is nice and clean now thanks for all your help.learning every day
