im thinking in a few months time in coming back to freshwater to get breeding. i want to breed guppies/endlers or both which will be easy enough. i also want a go at breeding an egglayer that isnt too difficult and will be ok for a 2 footer.

i have 2 tanks, 1 a 63 litre and the other a 28 litre. was thinking of either the parent fish in the 28 litre and the 63 for rearing or the other way around?

any advice and suggestions into egg layers would be appreciated.

that might be a good shout. do they not get too big for the tanks i have?? how many babies do they have at once?

was thinking about rams but i failed last time?

any more suggestions?

What's your water like? I would go from there. If you have very soft water maybe try danios, or small barbs like dwarf rasboras.
For serious breeding (selecting for a specific colour/ finshape whatever) you would need more than two tanks though. If you stick guppys in a tank they will multiply without doubt, but you will have difficulties to sell the offspring if they are nothing special.

I would have the parents in the 60 liter and the fry in the smaller one but if you can get a bigger fry tank it would make it much easier. But as long as you keep up with the water changes the fry should grow as normal.

As for what species I would stick to dwarf cichlids it will be the easiest option for you to go with if you want breeding success. Maybe dwarf checkerboard cichlids? Tiny tiny fish but very pretty and breeding should be managable in that size tank. Other options would be smaller apsitos like Nijsens

An other option could be some of the smaller gourami species like licourace or sparkling etc

but for both of the above you would perhaps need to consider peat filtration to lower your ph naturally I would avoid using chemicals. Or an other option could be RO water but when your keeping up with the water changes on a fry tank your going to be going through a water butt a week..... its about 25 liters of RO water for £1.99 - £2.50 depending where you go

Hi danb_1985 :)

Have you given any thought to Corydoras? C. aeneus, either bronze or albino, are excellent fish for the beginner just getting into breeding egg layers.

thanks, not sure about my water??? i will be doing this when i move so i wont know water till then?

i never thought about cories. i like albino too so that might be a very good option and will be a good contrast to the colours in the guppies.

thanks for the dwarf cichild idea maybe something to think about too but i may go for guppies and cories.

is there any extra info on breeding cories???

Hi danb_1985 :)

There is a lot of good information in the Corydoras section and we will try to answer any specific questions you might have. For a good place to start, have a look at this:
