Hey guys, I don't want to sound like I have no clue what I'm doing so before I do, I have everything I need for breeding. I have more than enough tanks for the males. And I'm going to be getting a microworm culture in a couple weeks. The question I have is:
My Male and female are in the breeding tank. The female is in the dividing tube, they can't get to each other. I want them both to be acclimated and want my male to build a nest. The problem is, I need to clean the females tank %100 and let it cycle for a week or so. I'm going on vacation in 2 weeks, and will be gone for 1 week. Is it okay if they stay just like this for 3 weeks? I don't want the fish to get completely stressed out, or just get aggravated and end up hating each other.

As you need to condition your fish thoroughly before pairing them up I would suggest this is a v.bad idea in 2 ways. If you breed them before you go you wont be there to care for the fry. If you do it after you get back they will be out of shape. Re-schedule the holiday or the breeding, you cant do both. You have obviously looked into this so dont mess it up now, the whole process is pretty hands on and you need to give it your full attention if you want to raise any to adults.

I was planning on breeding afterwards. The real question was, would they be okay with seeing each other. I will definitely condition them for a week after I get home but I just wanted to know if they'd be okay.

No they wouldn't be OK left like that for 3 weeks because they would stress each other out. Even if they can't get to each other, they can see each other.

Yes they should be ok. Possibly a bit teasy but as long as they both have enough space. There is an outside chance she may eject her eggs if she is particularly full. If you are really concerned you could block there view of each other. It is not just visual stimulus that will encourage mating, both fish will also release pheramones (sorry can say it cant spell it) into the water when they are receptive to mating. This will promote nest building etc.

He is already building his nest, if I took her out would they both get upset?

I think he is just going away for 1 week paradise.
Regardless of what you or I think about the treatment of fish I think, although not ideal, they willl probably be ok.

No he said three weeks... Males and females can be very aggressive towards each other and can either damage their gills from over-flaring at each other or he will bully her through the divider and stress her out unfortunately. I have bred betta's before and I've had one female who was ready to pop behind a divider with the male building on the other side. Next morning, she had damaged gills from flaring at the male unfortunately so I couldn't breed her.

As in, they will be in that condition for 3 weeks not just the week he is away...

My mistake paradise. 3 weeks is too long. I have never heard of damaged gils from over flaring, but there you go. If it happened to you it could happen to creature.
Dont do it mate, put her back with the other girls and start again when you get back. Why do you need to do a 100% clean on there tank? Surely if it was cycled before the filter media will be mature and you could clean the tank and then put it back in.

i would have more bettas if i were you, just in case thaat pair doesnt breed in which is more than likely to happen, so maybe condition a few more just in case

When they damage their gills they basically scar down the sides and can sometimes actually deform the gills as they sort of lock half stuck out which is almost what happened to my girl. She couldn't settle them back in place and they were scarred, not sure if i have a picture unfortunately.

I am also confused as to why a 100% clean needs doing? The filter will still be cycled when you've finished cleaning it as long as you keep it in some tank water in a bucket or such
