Scarlet badis female ???

Yesterday I bought this little fella
I choose and caught it myself after asking I asked the owner since the tank is about 90% males as usual
I'm trying to pair up a male I already have and breed them
So did I actually catch a female or a sub-male ??
I don't have any pics of it in the tank because I haven't seen it either
why? Simply because 40% of tank is covered in extremely densely grown pearlweed and the rest is tree bark and leaves
Tho I've seen the male multiple times haven't seen the other one
Hopefully I'll be able to get a pic soon to confirm it's gender

How does it compare in size to the one you have ?

0.75 ish in total body length I'd say

That being the case it’s possible you have either a male or a female . These are small fish if I remember right and may not yet be sexually mature at the size of your new one . All you can do is wait .

I haven't kept Badis of any kind since the pre-Dario days, this despite my finding them fascinating. Why are Scarlet Badis females so scarce? Exporters holding back? Diffculty catching them in the wild? Dealers don't want them for their lack of color? Several other species are most often found males-only--i.e. Trichogaster lalia (Dwarf Gouramis) and the still undescribed Nannostomus sp. 'the red things'. In the former I'm told it's the lack of color on females and dealers can't move them. In the latter, I believe it's an effort to corner the market since they are so damn expensive.

I believe it's kinda in between to limit breeding to keep the price up and stock issues since females are pale in color they won't sell out easily because not all people are trying to breed them and males do pretty fine on their own as a nano tank main

I’m not quite convinced that big fish farms and importers are that afraid that home hobbyists are a real threat to them and hold back females to keep us from glutting the market and cutting into their business . That seems like it would take a network of very busy guys working intensively and fervently to do that and I don’t think that exists . Anybody want to refute that because I really want to know .

I bred scarlet badis (Dario dario) right after they were discovered, females were not rare anywhere. There was only one problem in breeding (and I described it in some article, I think it was in PFK, it was a long time ago). The eggs of scarlet badis is simply so small that if you don't know, you can't see them. Really very small.

There are two males in the picture: dominant and subdominant.

It is just as well - when i had a male and female they bicker a lot usually finding something simple to argue about like which shrimp to eat or if they should bother chasing each other. It seems things are tranquil until you add a female and then the fighting breaks out.

Males can sometimes fight, but they do not hurt each other. See attachement.
