I unfortunately lost my male German Blue Ram yesterday to what seems to be Hole in the Head disease (not confirmed but the only thing I can think of) he was part of a breeding pair.
Now that my female is on her own, her colours are extremely dull. She is swimming about and eating as normal, but you can tell she is not herself.

I am a bit unsure as to what to do, I would be prepared to get another male, but what are the chances that she will get on with him? Will she be ok on her own, or will she die?
What actually happens when a fish from a breeding pair is left behind?

So gutted about my male :( I did everything I could to keep him alive but he just suddenly gave up the ghost.

Your female will be ok, either by herself or with another male. Personally, I would wait to add any new fish. Since you seem to have some kind of virus or bacteria attacking your fish.

Yeah I'm definitely not going to add anything for a while now, make sure whatever it was has disappeared. Touch wood, none of my other fish are sowing any symptoms of being ill and I can't see any other 'holes' or injuries on any of them. If I do eventually get another male, what are the chances they will pair up?

Also, down the line quarantine your new male to male sure he doesn't add anything to the tank. A minimum of 30 days is best.

Pretty good they'll pair up. Rams and most other Cichlids don't pair for life. They will within the confines of an aquarium, but in nature it rarely happens that the same two fish spawn more than once or twice in a life time.

I don't had any way if quarantining unfortunately =[ I only have the one tank, and no room for another hospital/quarantine tank.
Oh that's good then, I read somewhere that GBR's mate for life which was why I was so worried. I think I'll give it a good month before I look at adding another male but will definitely do so as they are such gorgeous fish!

What is your water temp? Do you feed them a varied diet as it may be caused by a vitamin deficiency. Rams need a high temp around 80 degrees plus they need excellent water quality - hole in the head can be caused by all these things

Temp is kept at 26 degrees. And their diet is varied, feed them flake, bloodworm, daphnia, and pellets that I can't remember the name of! I bought them for my angel but everyone seem to enjoy them. Water is always kept on too of and high quality.
