Hi,

I have a 40g freshwater tank with a breeding pair of angels, breeding pair of BNs and 5 zebra loaches.

It's planted, filtered by a fluval 405, ph is roughly nuetral (edging towards 7.5), mature for 7 years now, fertilized monthly & live food fed every week.

Do you think a pair of keyhole cichlids would suit this tank? I've been wanting another pair of fish for a while and these seem perfect for my setup..

Many thanks,

IME Keyholes spend a lot of the time in the upper levels of the tank, similar to Angels, and therefore problems are going to be more likely than if you went with something like rams or apistos which mainly inhabit the lower levels

Thanks,

I've kept rams before and wanted something a little bigger.

I have read that keholes prefer to stay around the mid to bottom part of the tank - is it just a case of they actually swim everywhere and some may have a preference?

Are there any larger cichlids that would go with a pair of angels?

Cheers,
Paul

Yeah you could say keyholes swim everywhere, although my two spend a good 80% of their time in the upper 1/3 of the tank

a pair of rainbow cichlids or redbreast acaras may be an option

Thanks Davo,

I've researched a little further and decided on 3 Opaline Gouramis instead - I have a 30g tank which I plan to keep keyholes & apistos in, as I really have warmed to these fish.

The Gourami option is the best way forward with the angels in mind, and with 3 (1M & 2F) opalines the 2 species should keep themselves to themselves - plus I once kept an Opaline for 15 years, one of my favourite pet fish ever! Plus he never had an issue with angels..

The 30g is similar to the one pictured above (just 10g smaller obviously), you can see it just to the left of the 2nd picture down.

Cheers,
Paul
