My intentions are to breed Tony's Oscars whilst in my custody before I hand them over to him in approximately 1 to max two weeks' time...... Now I'm looking for that magical formulae to induce them to spawn..... I will hatch the eggs artificially and rear the fry, if I can just get 'em to spawn before "D" day......

During the past 2 odd weeks, I've conditioned them on earthworm; Bloodworms; prawns and pellets..... I placed 3 flowerpots in with them, the largest being about 250mm diameter at the mouth and 300mm deep(long)...... They're in a huge pond at about 28.5 degrees C, and they have weekly 90% water changes done......

What more need I do to induce spawning???? (forgot to say that I'm 80% positive that there is at least 1 of each sex, and they're 12 inches long)

Haha, have you tried playing sexy music, bit of barry white maybe?

No idea really to help you, they are Oscars after all and will do things in their own good time, thats assuming they are m/f, which you cant tell until they do produce fertilised eggies :D

Their "own good time" may not correspond with what I have in mind.....

Geez!!... what could be so difficult.... You girl, me boy, let's do it..... I must mention that when I started off in fish (early 1970's) Oscars were listed as "not yet bred in captivity".... But, damnit!! times have changed .. They HAVE to breed in the next 2 weeks.

Oysters are said to be good to get ya in the mood ;)

Maybe you should give them a good talking to, explain the situation!

Those are all the soft issues that'll induce me to spawning..... We're talking fish here. (although i'll swap Barry White for Barry Manilow)

no idea, but it cheered me up

I just fed them, and still eating like gluttons, and the approximately 20 Platies, Mollies and juvenile convicts are feeding cheerfully alongside.... I wonder if they're not a gay couple???.... They've done the "lockmouth" thing, which is encouraging..

Very long time ago, I hand spawned my comet goldfish... Wonder if it'll work with Oscars??

good luck mate...

*walks away whistling a cheerful tune whilst gazing up at the stars*

if you get yours to breed in the next two weeks......i'll eat my oscars!!! (sorry but just trying to make you realise you may be attempting the impossible.... lol!)

LMAO thats a very brave thing to offer spishkey.. this is ludwig were talking about!!

lets hope they are not gay eh? i see this so many times i wonder now if fish can actually be gay hmmm!

i hope for both your sakes they get on with it... and soon!!

have a go!

all the things you have done sounds perfect :good:
unfortuanatly you cant rush luv, they have to go through the ritural and maybe shes annoyed at him because he went clubbing the other night, banned him from breeding for 2.5weeks

"A pair of breeding Oscars will go through various rituals such as lip locking, also known as jaw locking, you may also notice them chasing each other around the tank, nipping at each other and performing what sometimes looks like a very rough behaviour. Your Oscars may perform all of these strange behaviours, or just a couple. It is quite rare, but sometimes they don't do any of them. if you do start seeing your Oscars performing these strange behaviours, don't get too excited, it can often be many months before they actually start laying eggs. A short time before they start laying eggs, one or maybe even two days, they will go off their food. You will have probably observed them acting strangely such as excavating the substrate, as in picking up mouthfuls of gravel/sand and moving it to another part of the tank."

im confused now, reading the comments in that link, the guy says his oscars paired up a year ago; had a spawn, then 6 months later spawned again. mine spawned, then spawned again not even three weeks later, is this normal??? or perhaps because i took out their eggs they 'tried again' sooner?
