Hello!

I have been thinking about breeding a fish for quite some time now, and I have chosen to breed guppies. I've read up on the subject, and today I bought 2 more guppies to put in my main tank (along with the two that were there already). And now, before I place them in the breeding tank, has anyone got any tips or advice they would like to share with me? I'd really appreciate it! :good:

Thanks,

- Josh

To make a short story long Josh.... get yourself around 3 females for every male..... stock your tank with plenty Hornwort floating plants... and then sit back and whatch the babies roll in.... simple and straight forward.

thats pretty much it i bought 4females the other day and they are all preg i only bought them to keep my tank ticking over im deciding what i want to do with it

I got bored of guppies as they breed too easily. All you need is a few guppies to end up with millions

^^ I'm not sure you can call breeding guppies breeding fish unless you're going to line breed a specific trait so set up loads and loads of tank. Plus the fry are quite large so can take pre prepared dry food from the very first day they're born.

I don't want to put you off by any means, but seeing as you've already been given all the info you could possibly need for breeding guppies, I just wanted to say that you might consider breeding an egglayer. If you start with the easier ones it's still pretty straight forwards, but quite a bit more rewarding. However obviously it does still have to be a fish you enjoy keeping, so if guppies are for you then guppies are for you. But it's just something worth thinking about, especially as bog standard guppies can be a pain to find homes for...

I disagree, though I've heard they are easy I can't get mine to breed! :X

I doubt you can't get them to breed. More likely you're not getting any actual fertilisation when they breed. Could be genetic, could be diet based.

They won't breed if they're too stressed. Never, ever hold them in your hands! They will reabsorb the fry if they're too stressed out.

Do yours have enough places to hide?

theyre pretty much the rabbits of the fish world, just sit back and watch and enjoy

And don't forget to cross out the strait with unrelated fish every so often, it helps muchies.

First, you need to buy your guppies. You should always have 2 females for every male. This is because if you have equal or more amounts of males, they will harass the female until it dies. Buy guppies with the traits that you like, since most likely the fry will look like their parents. Also, before you buy the parents, make sure that they look healthy. When you bring the guppies home, just let them do what they do and make sure to keep stable water conditions. When you start noticing that the guppies are big and round and have gravid spots, move them to a bigger tank away from other fish. When the guppy looks square and its gravid spot is large and black, the guppy should give birth in the next day or so. When they give birth, move the guppies back to the main tank and feed the guppies 6 times a day for the first week or so, and then do twice a day.

The simplest way I have found to breed something as easy as guppies is to provide some swimming room, decent food and lots of cover like java moss. If you are not completely over-run by fry after a month or two, something is wrong with your arrangement. This tiny 10 gallon tank regularly gives me about 10 adults every 3 months to sell at auction.

Breeding Guppies is as easy as sleeping!

I'm new to breeding guppies too but what I hve so far is one male with 4 females because he is super active. Most say to have the temp around 72-74 but mine dont seem happy until its around 76. I've only had my females for 2 weeks and all 4 of them are pregnant. (One I believe was pregnant when I bought her though)

I have a section packed with plants so the fry can hide. I'm also getting live plants to float at the top. I believe its called hornwort and I was told the fry loves it!

As for taking care of the fry I have actually been taking care of one that I got free at my lfs. I was feeding her crushed tetra sinking pellets. I would crush it until it was very fine so they would be able to eat it although I will be using live brine shrimp one my guppies give birth.

Let me know how you do!
