Hi there. I have a spare 42 litre tank and am thinking of attempting to try and breed some Cory's. Never bred them before so am fancying a change. Nothing major, maybe just some Bronze or Peppered Cory's to start with.

How is best to do it?

I have had my Bronze Spawn before after a colder water change, but nothing came of them as they got eaten within seconds.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Have a good group of corys normally 2 males to 1 female works well, has you say cold water changes and feeding bloodworm daily is a good start, temperature around 22-24 degrees. :good:

Species only tank works well, but has they can be serious egg munchers, the eggs need to be removed fairly quickly, although best to leave them for around 15-20 mins so they can harden slightely otherwise they pop easy. roll them onto your finger and place in a net or tub,pop an airstone under the net or in the tub, depending which way you do it,bronze normally hatch 3 days later :good:

Have a read of this Breeding corys , lots of good info :good:

Good luck , let us know how they go :good:

What about decor? Bare bottom or sand? Could i just put them into the tank for a few days, let them spawn then remove the cory's?

Thanks for the help :)

Yep you can do it that way, then rear the fry in the tank, use a thin layer of sand over the bottom, you can add decor if you wish :)
Adding sand will stop the bacteria building up and with a clean up using an airline tube to remove any leftovers will help

A sponge filter run off an airstone is a good starter for fry, otherwise if using a standard filter you will need to put a sponge around the intake to stop any fry getting sucked up.

Keeping the tank minimum, will help keep the fry tank clean, has small daily w/c is good for the growth of the fry etc :good:

Add a few moss balls/moss for fry to take refuge :good:

Excellent, i have a small sponge filter and an air pump so will get it set up. May try Albino Bronze?! How big a group should i purchase? I have 3 Bronze atm and THINK there is 1F:2M, but they're in my planted tank and don't fancy catching them

Also, i doubt i would be able to pick a ratio of 1:2 out of an LFS tank?!

6 is a good number to breed with, then you'll get a mixture hopefully :good:

Look for plumper females and slender males, usually noticeable if they're adults or viewed from above :good:

Right, tank setup, filter cleaned and seeded. Decided to go with my original 3 for a week or two to see if its feasable to buy more or not.

Now to catch them...

Only advice i can give it so breed something a little more rare. I have 150 bronze fry growing well, around 8 weeks now, but when they are fully grown i'll be lucky to give them away. That said my local MA have said they will take them on if they have low stock. Highly recommend scouring eBay or contacting any breeders you might know to get something a little more interesting.

Cheers mate, I have someone near me with a few rarer breeds but I just wanted to give it a go first with something a bit easier. Also the reason why I'm not buying anymore and just using my 3.

If the spawn on the glass and I remove the 3 cory's do I have to do anything else?

Thanks.

Just make sure you have good airation in there, good airstone near the eggs or powerhead :good:

Some add meth blue to the tank to stop fungas on the eggs,i've never used it has it can knock the filter about if not dosed correctly, plus you need to do w/c 's to get it out before the eggs hatch, lots of hassle for 3-4 days waiting...

Has long has you have good circulation they should be ok :good:

Hows the catching going...

Right they're in! :D downside... I have had to completely rearrange my tank.

Now what then?

Let them settle for a few days then do a water change with cool water? How much?

If they're fairly lively in the morning, feed them bloodworm and do a 25% cold w/c :good:

Dependant on your temperature atm, mine was set at 22-23 degrees, with the w/c in dropped just below 22,within 24 hrs my albinos spawned

You might find they've started by the morning ;)

Few big threads in here from myself and harlequins, lots of tips in both for rearing them. gluck!
