Thi may not be in the right section but i think it is of interest to this section

If somebody was to keep a fish illegally i,e keep a northern snakehead or chinese sailfin sucker in an english pond (or tank), and post details or start a journal of them on this sight. would the mod team be ablieged to try and alert the appropriate authorities?

No i think il keep them to myslef. would you guys seriously tell the authorities?

I doubt anyone on here would be anal enough to do that, but this is the internet and is available for ALL to see. You don't know who could be watching.

Only if they were really crummy pictures. Take your time & get some good ones! :good:

if i ever do get something naughty il be sure to invest in a decent camera then

Looks like you caught John on a good day where he got out of the right side of the bed aswell!! BONUS!! :hey:

Apart from being really ugly (I looked at them on t'internet), what has the law to do with Chinese Sailfin's? Are they rare, or poisonous, what?

As far as I know they're illegal because they are an invasive species which could survive in our native waters if released (they get quite large and releasing into a nearby waterway is often the first thing people think of if a fish gets too big for the tank) and would be a threat to our native wildlife. I might be wrong though - someone correct me if I am.

No your right its because they are potential a inasive threat to our waterways. i think a group would be briliant in a garden po3nd though

I see. I saw a program on the TV about snakeheads and while I didn't know about the sailfin's I can certainly see why we don't want snakeheads here, horrible things that get oh so big.

Many tropical fish wouldn't survive a winter in Britain's waterways, but there are some that would, and if they were predatory and released and could survive year on year that would be very bad for our native fish :( it's easier just to ban them outright than to state that you can only keep with a license/in a pond blah blah.

Yeah i agree cazzie. i have found a few shops near me that sell channel catfish and rosey red minnows. i thought they were banned?

while researching for my upcoming pond i found that the burbot is a banned species even though they are a native fish but considered to be extinct in our waters. i thought that was odd

There are also problems with areas prone to flood. All seems well and good keeping them in a pond but if there is a lot of rain and the pond overflows badly, they can suddenly be finding their way into rivers by accident.
