Brand New Tank

Pufferpunk,

Sorry, I misread your e-mail. Blurred the comment about discus people with what you were doing. Apologies. 50% once a week seems a lot to me, but if it works for you, I can see the logic behind it.

Glad your fish are spawning. If they are, then by my reckoning, you're doing things right. Well done. How do you get around the aggression between the puffers, though? Will males and females get along? How do you even sex them?

Cheers,

Neale

The species of puffers I was breeding are have easily distinguishable sexes (T lorteti). I would have to say, the only puffers I would suggest keeping together for breeding is the dwarf. My female spawned with her male 3x, before she killed him. I have heard of this many times. They must be kept in adjoining tanks (so they can see each other ) & put together only for spawning. The male may rear the fry for a while, but some will eat them. :/

Well, after getting my levels to normal, I have my first fish. She's a beautiful knight goby that just devoured some frozen bloodworms. Now she's swimming around like crazy, of course most of the time she hides from me though. My LFS had several knight gobies, but only this one when I went yesterday. I'll either buy a couple more when they get in, or get them at another store (going to a couple today) if I can find them. My Figure 8 will be added soon, I just need to find one around town. My normal LFS has a couple, but they don't look so good. They have some nasty lookin' stuff peeling off their bodies, at least that's what it looks like. My wife thought it was just bubbles on them at first, but it's definitely not. Hopefully I can find one at another store around here, as I'd rather not order online.

Ya, I'm going up to my normal LFS (checked a couple others today, they don't have 'em) to check them out again. My wife thinks they just had bubbles on them, I'm not sure. I'll ask when they might be getting more in. They had a lot, then they put them in with GSPs, and don't even have them listed anymore. So anyway, I'll see what I can find, and have them special order me one if I don't like the look of things.

Pufferpunk is right, F8s are very common. You should wait until you see F8s available in good condition before you buy. 2 of my 3 F8s had "bubbles" on them one week after I bought them. It turned out the "bubbles" are really ick. Raising the SG (more salt), adding Melafix and Pimafix eventually cured them within a week. Although the ick is gone, the smaller one got so stressed out it refused to eat. Within two days it perished. :-(

Stopped by the LFS on the way home from work to look at them again. As much as I wanted them, I said no. I did special order one though, and it should be in Wednesday or Thursday. Also ordered a couple more knight gobies. Just a month ago their Figure 8s looked great, but now they look starved and sick, almost dead.

I'm really excited now. The one knight goby I have is doing great, and is a beautiful fish, pictures definitely don't do them justice.

Quick update... I added my Figure 8 today. The LFS got them in earlier this week, and I went today and they all looked very healthy. He (don't know if it's a he or she) is active and exploring, and only got into one small fight with my goby. They snapped at each other a few minutes after I put the puffer in the tank, but that was it, they haven't bothered each other since.
