My fish order arrived this morning, containing 11 Hyphessobrycon sp. Red Cherry. They arrived in very good condition and accepted both frozen and microcrumb food within a few hours after being added to my QT. My original plan was a 2-week Q period, but I may slash that down to one week instead, unless they show any signs of illness. I'll be doing daily water changes and 2 small feedings. Think I got a decent deal for these fish at £6 a fish (8 USD). The great thing is that I have a decent variety of sizes/ages. No idea about the M to F ratio, though, as they do still need to colour up more & need better lighting like in the main tank. Hoping to have a worry-free week with these fish before they move into their intended tank.

I've had 2 unsuccessful tries at breeding mine. The way they are appearing at good prices in many places suggests it shouldn't be hard, so a third try will be in order this winter.

When researching them, I came across a number of German hobbisysts/breeders who had very detailed experiences with them. I'm thankful I'd studied German in high school, so I could understand the basic gist of what was being said. Some parts did require a translator though.

Really enjoying these guys so far. Feeding has been an intriguing watch compared to the other species I have. Frozen copepods seem to be their favourite so far. The tank is going through a bacterial bloom, which has hindered my water changes. I will skip today's and do one tomorrow instead.

Ok, so this is kind of cheating, but who wouldn't use the RGB lighting on a Fluval Flex with these fish! My 14-year-old camera and very dimly lit room doesnt do them justice, they look even better in person.

Some photos as well. Still struggling to understand the male and female characteristics with this species.

Yep….they’re super hard to sex by appearance. Perhaps seeing mating behavior might be the best or only way. Mine are in a 33g long tank with yellow phantom tetras and fire green tetras, so I may never know unless I set up a breeding tank….which is not likely.
