Brand New Sterbais..

So i brought 9 sterbais as I got a good deal on them $36 for 9

When I first added them to a bare bottom 10 gallon they were swimming across the glass and doing their thing, no problem, nothing I havn't seen before (I got 15 peppered cory, 20 sterbais (total), 8 trillineutus (sp sorry), looking to add even more in the future.

Now yesterday. all their colours came back when they were added to my tank, today when I woke up, they were acting really wierd, DARTING around, not swimming, and one lost alot of it's colour, I have never had a cory that looked settled into the tank THEN lost its colours, the cories looked kinda stressed, I just made a 20% water change, I don't have a test kit with me right now so I really don't know what the hell is going on, water quality? I just look all the gravel from the tank yesterday, something to do with the bacteria? I really don't know whats up.

They seem to be doing better after the water change, not darting around

You do owe us some full tank shots. I want to see all of these Cories.

Sterbai are great swimmers and are not still long. They will swim all over the tank, back and forth, up and down. If they are not darting to gulp air a lot, they are probably okay. The loss of color is troubling, but I think just keep an eye on him. He got stressed by something.

If you have an air wand or some bubble wands, that will help with extra air. That is a lot of Corys to add at once, so you may need to up the water changes until the tank stabalizes. There might easily have been a mini cycle with the removal of the gravel and the addition of a load of fish. If you can add some mature media from another tank it might help the tank to catch up to the extra ammonia. Next time perhaps put some of the gravel in a stocking and leave it for awhile in the tank.

You don't say the size tank or the stock level.

I'll be posting pictures once I start on the planted tank, the 55 gallon is nothing like it is in the picture in my sig. I'll perhaps start a journal.

Good news, everyone is back to normal, the one that lost all it's colour is slowly getting it back I left the filter media in the tank when I took out all the gravel.

All the cories except for the 9 new sterbais are in the 55 Gallon at the moment, I'm slowly getting rid of all the fishes except the cories. I will stock the planted tank in the future with 10 Ottos, all the cories (looking for some Gossei Corydoras) 50-70 Cardinal Tetras, maybe another large school of Rummy nose and that's probably it.

Where are you getting gossei? I have two who keep trying to give me more, and so far I am not a successful nanny to the gossei. I like them very much, an attractive fish.

I am surprised that they have stopped their antics. Mine dance night and day. They very much like strong water currents such as bubble wands and strong filter flow or maybe a power head.

I'm planning to get my LFS to order them for me, I am good friends with the owner so I can get pretty good deals.

I spotted a little sterbai with a minor case of fin rot, is it contagious? My tank water is very clean so I assume it will stop rotting and grow back without medications?

Fin Rot is a bacterial infection, so yes it can be/is contagious. I would quarantine and treat myself. It is easily cured if caught early. A bare bottomed 2 + gallon tank with some Mela/PimaFix would clear it up quickly, although I normally would use a Mardel antibiotic for fin rot--there are several choices. If there is substrate then there can be nasties lurking there, and Corys are on the bottom where it all ends up.

Well I suppose if the other fish are healthy then they wouldn't get infected? I also have guppies in the tank, anyway I don't use medications and I told u I took all the substrate out, I hope hes gonna be ok
