I'd not heard of this, but according to the Adelaide Aquarium, Scleropages jardinii prefers water with a bit of salt added because it lives in coastal rather than inland habitats.

Not that I'm suggesting we rush out an add one of these bruisers to our tanks of mollies, but it's an interesting scrap of information I thought.

I wouldn.t believe anything a Aussie fish website says :p quite interesting but I don't think it is overly valid..could be wrong and probably am :D
 
I've read something similar before somewhere, if i remember rightly it said that there are brackish populations of jardini arowana in coastal rivers and water ways as well as completely landlocked freshwater populations in lakes and dammed upper reaches of rivers. I wouldn't recomend keeping captive specimins in salted water however, ive been keeping my jardini in freshwater for the last 5 years and it is a large beautifull healthy specimin which certainly proved they dont require salt and most jardini available in the hobby are captive bred anyway so would almost certainly have been bred in freshwater.
