my bowfin/dogfish has stopped eating and i dont know what to do ive looked every were this is his last hope

Need some background here. How big is it? How long have you had it? Most important of all, what's the water quality/chemistry, and what have you been feeding until now.

A common mistake is the use of feeder fish. Putting aside the parasite problem this causes and the high thiaminase levels in goldfish and minnows, predators fed live foods often go on "hunger strike" for reasons not altogether clear. Monotony (boredom) may be a part of the problem.

Cheers, Neale

its about a foot and five inches chemistry is good and i feed it these balls thats a mix of shrimp vegi herring vitamins and i feed him
nonseasoned cooked shrimp ive had it for about 2 years i think i rescued it when it was about a inch and a half

Right. Try doing a substantial water change, 40-50% (keeping water chemistry the same, naturally) but lowering the water temperature by a couple degrees C. This often stimulates coldwater/subtropical fish.

Stop feeding for a few days. Don't offer anything. NOTHING at all. After 4-5 days, offer something very tasty like an earthworm, and then see what happens.

Cheers, Neale

PS. Your menu sounds pretty good with the vitamins included, but shrimps and herring aren't the best foods (high in thiaminase) and I'd lean more towards earthworms, cockles and tilapia fillet (which are all thiaminase-free).

thank u i put a earth worm near the water just now and he ate it and i have some talapia defrosting now he hasent eten for 3 days i dont now how to thank u u saved his life

Glad to help and that things are working out! Earthworms are like crack cocaine to most fish, and if it's going to eat anything, a fish will usually go for earthworms. Useful to know. You might even want to set up a wormery in the garden (DIY plans and commercial kits widely available) so you have a permanent supply. Because earthworms eat plant matter their guts are filled with partially digested plant material as well as soil, and this makes them a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre.

If your Bowfin is tame, try using forceps (or chopsticks) to hold a sliver of tilapia at the top of the tank where you can wiggle it enticingly. These should lure the Bowfin into action, and he'll come take the food, even though it's dead.
