I have always wanted to play the violin but as a kid my parents wouldn't let me saying "you play the piano, isn't that enough". So I kept playing the piano for many years (exams and all) till when I was at uni and uni study took up too much time to be able to do the required amount of practise for my level.

So a few weeks ago I was talking to a girl at work who learnt the violin as an adult and said it is do-able especially if I know how to read music and all. So I organised lessons and yesterday bought my first violin.

Here it is:

At the moment it sounds OK though yesterday it sounded a bit like a dead cat  Of course I have no idea ATM which note is which and how I am meant to play :p

I have my first lesson next weekend and can't wait!!!

OH....the violin cost me $260 including the violin, bow, case, rosin erm, tuner and shoulder rest. I am still thinking of what fishy stuff I coulda bought with the money :X

Very nice violoin! It looks good!

I would have though $260 was a good price for a violin! :D Goodluck with those lessons!

i used to play it afew years ago then i just forgot.i have a brand new one collecting dust in the back of my wardrobe.................

I'm sure you'll love it. I learned the flute as a kid, but always fancied something different. My youngest son is learning the violin - I have an adult sized one and have been picking stuff up from his lessons. It's nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be learning as an adult. There are loads of great classical tunes that you can get started on quite quickly - that's the thing I hate most about learning a new instrument is practicing boring 3 note tunes !

You're going to drive yourself insane. :p

Violin's not actually as easy as some people make it out to be. I can play a gazillion instruments: bass/tenor/alto/soprano saxophone, flute, bass/alto/soprano clarinet, trumpet, trombone, valve trombone, french horn, tuba, piano, bass, guitar, xylophone/bells.. pretty much anything you will find in a high school band room. But when I tried violin, it was a miserable failure. It's the one bloody instrument that I just can't seem to pick up! :grr:

Good luck with it though.. if you're determined and you have a great teacher it's most definitely do-able! I think my problem was that I tried to teach myself. I figured I'd taught myself all the other instruments I play, so the violin would be easy. Heh.. so wrong. My parents made me sell it after 2 months of playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star every day.

That's great Angry _Platy! Actually, out of all the instruments i played, I think I liked the violin best.. or at least it was up there!

Don't worry about sounding like you're killing a cat.. we all went through that :p Just make sure you have a sound proof room for a while B)

good luck!

Great stuff ! I loved playing the violin and did for years - but it became a chore when I it came to the point where I had to practice for 3 hours a day :S

Still have the violin, but haven't played for years.

Good luck and enjoy! (even if your house mates or neighbours do not  )
